ConceptSolid State Breakers (SSB) are power electronic switches that are automatically operated to protect a load from damage caused by overload or short circuit. It is designed to detect a fault condition and immediately turn off thereby interrupting current flow to the load. Unlike a circuit breaker, which mechanically operates within 10 - 100ms (depending on conditions), the SSB is designed to operate within 10 - 20μs. Unlike a fuse, which has to be replaced, a SSB can be reset (either manually or automatically) to resume normal operation. Note: The use of a breaker (whether mechanical or solid state) inevitably means that these systems are not failsafe. The High Speed Electronic Fuse exhibits the same high speed features of the SSB while operating as a fast, fail-safe fuse. SSBs and HSEFs are designed for Low Voltage AC or DC applications from 0.6 to 3.0MVA.
