ConceptSolid State Breakers (SSB) are power electronic switches that are automatically operated to protect a load from damage caused by overload or short circuit. It is designed to detect a fault condition and immediately turn off thereby interrupting current flow to the load. Unlike a circuit breaker, which mechanically operates within 10 - 100ms (depending on conditions), the SSB is designed to operate within 10 - 20μs. Unlike a fuse, which has to be replaced, a SSB can be reset (either manually or automatically) to resume normal operation. SSBs are designed for Low Voltage AC or DC applications from 0.6 to 3.0MVA. Note: The use of a breaker inevitably means that these systems are not fail-safe. For information regarding fast, fail-safe fuses please see the High Speed Electronic Fuse webpage.
