Constant current regulator technology (Page 2 of 5)

UPS Technology
Power Factor Derating Thycon has been manufacturing phase-controlled thyristor regulators for many years. The earliest models date back to 1970 and many are currently used in Australian airports.

Several methods have been employed over the years to control airfield lighting.

Moving coil regulators
Monocyclic square regulators
Transductors
Thyristor tap changers
Antiparallel thyristor regulators

These use phase control of output voltage by loop current sensing and are disadvantaged by
(see Figs. 1 & 2):
steep fronted loop voltage
highly peaky voltage and current waveforms
amplified voltage oscillations due to cable capacitance
Damped harmonic filters in the loop circuit are essential (see Fig. 3), but design may depend on runway characteristics.
