UPS – Industrial

Uninterruptible Power Supply - Industrial

Understanding the risk level and translating it into power protection availability requirements is essential. For more than 40 years, THYCON has been designing high availability and resilient power protection concepts to help IT, operations and facility managers to easily tailor their power protection systems to meet highest availability requirements.

Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) protect critical equipment and facilities from being exposed to mains power failures, brownouts, voltage spikes and frequency deviations.

THYCON’s UPS product range includes:

  • Static UPS for Commercial and Industrial applications from 850VA to 5MVA in a single unit. Single units can be paralleled up to 20MVA of UPS power. THYCON supplies both standalone and modular UPS systems taking advantage of the benefits of each type of system.
  • Diesel Rotary UPS from 800kVA to 2.6MVA single unit systems.

Static UPS

Static UPSs convert power from the mains to DC and store it in a battery. When a mains failure occurs the static UPS inverts the power from the battery to provide a conditioned supply of controlled frequency and voltage that keeps the critical equipment going unaffected by the quality or the availability of mains power.

Battery autonomy can be applied from 5mins to several hours while the system as required by the application.

THYCON offers several types of Static UPS providing several advantages depending on the application:

  • Industrial UPS provides a standalone, robust, transformer based, 20 year design life, rugged thyristor based product.
  • FlexiPower UPS provides a modular, hot swappable, transformerless, 12 year design life, IGBT based product.
  • ComPower UPS provides a standalone, compact, transformerless, 12 year design life, IGBT based product. ComPower UPS are available in single phase in/out, three phase in/out and three phase in single phase out options.

Applications

UPS protect critical applications that cannot afford to be disrupted by mains power failures such as computer systems and networks for defence, commerce and industry, newspaper presses, manufacturing machines and stadium lighting.

Modern, highly critical computer networks are often designed with redundancy to ensure continuing supply in the unlikely event of a UPS failure.

Redundancy methods are provided by:

  • Dual cord system design
  • N+1 design with static transfer switch
  • N+1 design with static bus tie
  • N+1 design with modular UPS application

Industrial UPS (MPX and HPX)

THYCON’s premium UPS offerings are the MPX and HPX series UPSs, which are industrial grade units. Unlike other solutions on the market, the MPX and HPX UPSs are thyristor based units and are substantially more robust compared to IGBT based technology. MPX technology is designed for LV applications (415V), while HPX is designed for higher voltage applications (960V). Some of the significant features of the MPX and HPX series’ include:

20year + design life, a genuine Industrial Unit

THYCON designed operating life is 20 years or more, with less ongoing maintenance. The simple, ‘bullet-proof’ design of THYCON’s MPX series contains components that are twice rated, to easily cope with overload situations. There is no requirement for fuses, which would be the most common part requiring replacement. In the place of fuses are twice rated circuits, and circuit breakers, which can be easily reset saving both time and maintenance.

Simple Design = High Performance + High Reliability

Thyristor utilisation ensures THYCON does not need to parallel up internal power circuits to deliver high power, thus increasing reliability of the circuitry.

THYCON’s Static Flywheel

All THYCON UPS systems utilise a static flywheel technology that acts as a store house of energy to deal with instantaneous load changes and downstream load faults. This technology, unique to THYCON, provides our static UPS units with an ability to withstand fault events, similar to rotary UPS machines, but without the maintenance hassles derived from having moving parts.

A Genuine all-round performance

The MPX can operate through a power factor range from 0.6 lagging through to 0.7 leading without de-rating. This can be achieved with the UPS operating anywhere within its operating temperature range (up to 40oC), rather than just at 20oC stipulated by many competitors. The MPX is also built with output galvanic isolation as standard.

Environment

The equipment can be used in computer rooms or in harsher environments without de-rating. THYCON equipment can be containerised to provide a complete solution for extreme environments. In many cases there is no need for special air conditioning, reducing operating and capital costs.

HPX advantages

HPX is designed for very large data centre applications to operate at voltage levels just below the MV threshold. This enables maximised efficiency and cost reductions of distribution materials while maintaining the safety regulations and cost benefits of LV standards.
